Private Pilates vs. Group Classes: Which One Is Right for You?

You've heard Pilates can transform how you move, but should you go for private sessions or join a group class?

Here's the truth: both have their place. Below are some reasons arguring for group classes and privates sessions. Read on, and choose which one resonates with you and your movement goals.

Group Classes

Group Pilates classes are fun. You show up, follow along, and get a solid workout. There's energy in moving with others. The instructor cues exercises, and everyone does the same movements together.

Here’s the challenge: your body isn't like everyone else's.

You might have tight hips from sitting all day. The person next to you might be recovering from a shoulder injury. Someone else could be training for a marathon. Yet you're all doing the exact same workout.

Group classes work if you're healthy, mobile, and just want to move. And if you have any movement restrictions a certified Pilates instructor will be able to offer you modifications I a class setting. However, if your movemnt goals or restrictions are very specific, a group class might not be your best option, and you should look into scheduling private sessions.

Private Sessions

A private Pilates session means the entire 50-55 minutes is built for you, your body, your goals and your life.

Instructors will generally take a few minuted during your very first private session to conduct an assessment. We’ll watch you move, ask what hurts, what you want to improve and understand what is important in your daily life. Maybe you’re a golfer trying to take a few strokes off your swing. Or, you’re a mom who is getting back into movement after giving birth and want to be able to pick up your child without back pain. You could also be someone who is getting back into movement after surgery.

The point is, instructors will program sessions that address these goals and more.

For example if you book a private session with me, I can:

  • Modify exercises for your body's needs

  • Progress you at your pace

  • Spot movement patterns that might cause pain down the road

  • Focus on the areas that matter most to you

  • Adjust in real-time based on how you're feeling that day

In a Private, you’re not trying to keep up with anyone. You're not wondering if you're doing it right. You're getting exactly what your body needs.

So Which One Should You Choose?

If you're healthy, motivated by community, and want general fitness, group classes are the way to go.

If you want movement that serves your life and helps you achieve specific goals, private sessions are the answer.

You get my full attention. You get a program designed for your body. You get coaching that helps you move better where it counts.
